What is a National Lockdown

A National Lockdown is a disaster management technique, aimed to curb the rapidly spreading infectious COVID-19 or commonly known as Coronavirus. With 20% of the global population currently in some form of lockdown, South Africa has followed suit as of midnight 26th March.

Initially the Nationwide Lockdown would occur from Midnight 26th March to Midnight 16th April. However since the latest announcement from President Ramaphosa the lockdown has been extended by 14 days.

“This evening, I stand before you to ask you to endure even longer. I have to ask you to make even greater sacrifices so that our country may survive this crisis and so that tens of thousands of lives may be saved.

After careful consideration of the available evidence, the National Coronavirus Command Council has decided to extend the nation-wide lockdown by a further two weeks beyond the initial 21 days.

This means that most of the existing lockdown measures will remain in force until the end of April.”

- Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa

The lockdown will restrict our movements, this means we are to remain in our homes and only leave when absolutely necessary - to resupply on food or medicine, visit the doctor or hospital or collect a government grant.
