If you’re feeling adventurous, you can explore the boulders for a closer view of the penguin colony at Foxy Cove. Boulders Beach is also great for snorkelling when the water is clear and parents can easily keep an eye on the kids if they go for a swim.

Visiting The Penguin Colony

The beach is home to the endangered African Penguin which can only be found on the coastlines of southern Africa.

The penguins have called Boulders their home since 1984 and have perfectly climatized to the warmer waters the Indian Ocean brings. Swimming at Foxy Beach is prohibited to ensure the penguins are not too disturbed by humans. The newly renovated boardwalk allows you to get up close and even see penguins nesting.

Tips

  • Having a San Parks Card gets you free access to the Beach
  • The parking lots can become quite crowded, street parking makes the walk to the boardwalks a lot easier and can cost you under R100 for the day.
  • No selfie sticks are allowed on the boardwalk.
  • Remember to pick up after yourself or face a steep fine.
  • A morning trip before 11am is the quietest visiting time. If you’re lucky, you can have the place all to yourself.
  • Pack a picnic and enjoy the sand at Boulders just left of the penguin colony.

Parking

There is free but limited parking available at Bellevue Road and Link Cresent, they run adjacent to the Simon’s Town Country Club. There is also parking available on the street, however, it is metered, so don’t forget to bring some change.

How To Get There

CAR

Driving to Simon’s Town is blissful thanks to the beautifully renovated road that trails along the coastline. This much-loved drive takes you into the heart of Fish Hoek and then clings along the mountainside to the friendly fishing village called Simon’s Town. The 31 minute coastal drive from Muizenberg to Simon’s Town will have you in awe of the wonders of nature.

TRAIN

Getting to the beach via train can be a fun family experience, Simon’s Town station is not too far from the beach and the surrounding architecture will keep you entertained as you stroll along the main road taking in the towering mountains above.

Fishing At Boulders

A nice Galjoen catch.@henkschuurman1

If you move further away from Foxy Cove, where the penguin colony lives, you are permitted to fish in the surrounding areas. A fishing license can be purchased from the local post office at a small fee.

This allows you the opportunity to catch Cape Roman, Hotties, Galjoen and Dassies (not the land Dassies). Picking shellfish for bait requires a picking license which can also be purchased from the Post Office.

There are regulations to the size, amount and type of fish you may catch so be sure to read through the regulations and requirements before purchasing a license.

Tip: Wading in at low tide to just past the boulders is ideal for some big catches.
  • Cost:
    • R45 - Angling 4 week permit
    • R69 - Angling annual permit

After a morning at the beach, why not visit one of the many restaurants and cafes that line the water’s edge. Have all your cravings met with ice cream on the harbour watching the boats come in.

Whatever you do decide to do on your trip to Boulders, have that camera ready as photo opportunities with the Indian Ocean as your backdrop will leave all your friends envious.
