You might be familiar with the term 'Batavia' - hailing from Indonesia, the birth place of Cape Malay cuisine, it is said to be the origin of Cape Malay people in South Africa.

Cape Town is one of the most diverse cities in the world and its doesn't surprise us at all that small niche restaurants are taking on old traditional favourites and reinventing them while remaining true to their heritage.

Get to Know Batavia Café

Batavia re-opened it's doors in 2015, and since then has become a hot spot in the Bo Kaap community. The warm friendly atmosphere is only exalted by owner Nadia.

Located on the corner of Church and Rose street, this bustling community cafe feels like home.

The Brightly coloured building will attract more than just the eye@Batavia Café

Totally gutted and then newly refurbished, the royal blue building is easy to spot with it's small cafe tables outside wrapped along the patio. It looks like a scene taken straight out of a romance novel, where it is almost expected that two lovers lock eyes for the first time.

As the natural light dances through the windows we see residents, locals, business men and woman paroling the streets outside. The cafe plays host to a variety of clientele and their halaal stamp ensures everyone is invited!

Each fresh ingredient is carefully selected from local producers so you are sure to receive the best in organic ingredients and nothing goes to waste.

The chefs shared a story about how the cafe used over ripped fruits to make their own home-made preserves and jams that are served up right here at Batavia!

The Cape Town dining scene has boomed over the passed few years and a growing need and want for traditional Malay cuisine captivated Nadia's interests. With restaurants popping up faster than we could say 'Bon Appetite', Nadia knew her take on Malay cuisine would cater to this not so niche market.

From deconstructed breyani's to gourmet koeksisters and hand rolled croissants, everything that bellows from the kitchen is packed with goodness and flavour.

Huevos en el Bosque - a twist on a traditional tomato shakshuka, freshened up with spring greens while still embracing those core eastern herbs and spices.@restoranbatavia

The every changing menu complements each season perfectly, making it a frequented hangout for all walks of life.
