The 5th African Women International Writers Symposium, in partnership with the National Department of Arts and Culture will take place at The Fringe, Joburg Theatre, from the 13 to the 16 of September.

The entrance is FREE for all the sessions, but booking is essential. Please RSVP to urbanart10@gmail.com . Light refreshments will be served

This will be the 5th annual African Women International Writers Symposium (AWWS) which will include talks, poetry performance, masterclass writing workshops and panel discussions from leading local and international writers. The aim is to celebrate the achievements of women authors and to offer women a tangible platform to a) shape the road ahead not only through their writing but in collective projects that can build intra-Africa relations, b) enhance literary relations with women in Africa and the African diaspora. The symposium will feature the 3rd annual In Memoriam Nadine Gordimer Lecture.

Jamaican poet Laureate and guest writer Professir Lorna Goodison will participate in the poetry reading and panel discussions as well as run a masterclass writing workshop. She received the Commonwealth Poetry Prize for the Americas for her second book of poetry, I am Becoming My Mother (1986). She is Professor of English and of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan.

- Thursday 14 Sept at 6.30pm: Literary Panel Discussion and Talk

- Friday 15 Sept at 6.30pm: Nadine Gordimer In Memoriam Lecture presented by Lorna Goodison

Followed by an evening of poetry and music.

- Saturday 16 Sept from 11am to 2pm: Literary Panel Discussions


From Wednesday 13 to Friday 15 September, there will be Masterclass Writing Workshops at The Fringe, Joburg Theatre, Braamfontein. At 2pm. The entrance is FREE, but booking is essential. Rsvp: urbanart10@gmail.com

Internationally and nationally renowned authors, writers and poets give workshops to develop writers of all ages. These workshops are open to the public but booking is essential as space is limited.
